Ask any local if St Maarten is ready for status apartus, and chances are, the answer will be no.
Ask them if St Maarten should receive status apartus, and the answer is overwhelmingly Yes.
I tried to argue the obvious contradiction, but it appears that although locals are very aware of how corrupt the island government is, they believe that the corruption in the Netherlands, is far more sinister, and deeper than anything that can be found in St Maarten.
The more locals that I asked the question to, the more I realized that St Maarteners are quite politically savvy, many are just so used to, and content with the old ways.
They see rule by the Dutch, as just a way for the Dutch to get their hands on more money.
I guess I will have to wait for the feedback from the Nederlanders in St Maarten and everywhere else.
Is the Netherlands as/more corrupt than St Maarten?

The Dutch are brokers. They can stand the idea of locals doing extremely well in this small society. I listened to a man talking about one of our local Knights. He was critical that the man became extremely weathly. They hate progress as long as locals are controlling the lion share of this country.
they will do whatever they can to destroy this structure taht we have on st. Maarten. I am waiting to see the results of the 1010-10.

Maybe it's because corruption is everywhere on the island.....

The Netherlands is not making any money on Sint Maarten or the Netherlands Antilles, it is costing them money (hence the debt relief, etc.!!). So where the idea comes from that the Dutch 'get their hands on the money' of the people of St Maarten comes from is totally unclear to me. The Dutch would actually be thrilled to set St. Maarten free, but fortunately feel a moral obligation to protect the people of St Maarten against its corrupt politicians, police officers, etc. So no complete independence without properly functioning government. And yes, of course there is corruption in the Netherlands (people are the same everywhere), but at least when this is public information people don't vote for the guy!! Here people do not care, as long as there is a personal benefit in voting on the politician. In The Netherlands perhaps people would perhaps do the same, but the country is too big to base electoral victory on personal favors to voters.
